Carnival's Fleet wide "Nautica Spas"
For today's health-conscious vacationers, getting or staying in shape is an all-important component of a well-rounded vacation experience. To meet this growing trend, fleetwide "Nautica Spa" program features some of the largest and most elaborate health clubs at sea, including a 15,000-square-foot facility on the world's largest cruise ship, the 101,353-ton MS Carnival Destiny.
The program, available on each of the line's 12 "Fun Ships," is so popular that in the past year alone, more than 650,000 guests -- some 50 percent of those vacationing with Carnival -- took advantage of the spas' facilities. Nearly 300 individual pieces of high-tech exercise equipment and dozens of pampering treatments are housed in more than 100,000 collective square feet of space.

"Over the past few years, we've seen a significant increase in the number of guests who want to start or continue a fitness regimen, or enjoy some personal pampering while at sea, which is why we've gone to great lengths to equip our spas with the latest technology and treatments," said Bob Dickinson, Carnival president.

Eight Carnival "Fun Ships" house spas of at least 12,000 square feet while another such facility will be featured the new smoke-free Paradise when that ship debuts this fall. All Carnival ships offer a full gym complete with the latest exercise equipment and free weights, weight circuit classes, which challenge participants on the various machines, at least three swimming pools, along with a wide range of workout classes offered at different interest and activity levels. These include everything from high- and low-impact aerobics classes to step, aqua and senior aerobics or even specialized calisthenics, relaxation and stretching sessions.

Additionally, ships feature a wide variety of sophisticated Keiser progressive resistance exercise machines, whirlpools, saunas and steam rooms. For those guests who want to exercise in the fresh sea air, Carnival also offers organized mile-long walks on the ships' upper decks or one-eighth-mile jogging tracks which are featured on the MS Carnival Destiny and Carnival's seven "Fantasy-class" vessels. Not just a great place for working out. The facilities offer a variety of ways to pamper, including several soothing "European-style" therapies.

Treatments range from the conventional, such as full-body massages, seaweed wraps and mud packs, to the exotic, with therapies such as the Ionithermie Superdetoxification Treatment, a 90-minute therapeutic slimming treatment that utilizes a cleansing algae concentrate, and La Therapie, a "bio-technical" facial. Combining organic gels and creams with low-level electronic stimuli to leave guests feeling relaxed, re-energized and refreshed.

The spa's well-trained experts administer all treatments. In addition to leading workout classes, they offer one-on-one wellness counseling sessions, tips on health and nutrition, and proper training techniques. The staff also holds familiarization talks to acquaint guests on the spas' many services and activities, as well as conducts health evaluations and screenings utilizing sophisticated electronic testing equipment.

The program recently soared to new heights, literally, with the debut of a stunning, two-level Nautica Spa on the new MS Carnival Destiny. The epitome of ocean-going spas, the 15,000-square-foot health club features more than 40 different pieces of high-tech exercise equipment and 10 private treatment rooms, many with personal showers, which offer the ideal venue for the ship's sophisticated menu of pampering services.

One of the more interesting ways to work out is on the Carnival Destiny's new virtual bicycle in which guests "tour" a variety of routes, including mountain pathways and snow-covered trails. Also available is a new hydrotherapy bath, unique to the Carnival Destiny, which is a personal Jacuzzi-like tub where seaweed, aromatherapy, special oils and other ingredients create a soothing, rejuvenating sensation. And, when guests are done with their workouts or treatments, there's a juice bar specializing in fresh-squeezed juices and other healthful concoctions.

Healthy Dining: Nautica Spa Fare
Continuing Carnival's commitment to healthier lifestyles is the line's Nautica Spa Fare, designated by a special menu symbol indicating that the dish is lower in fat, sodium, cholesterol and calories. Poultry and meats are broiled or roasted, salads are prepared with low-fat or fat-free dressings and desserts with sugar substitutes. Vegetarian dishes are available at each meal, as well.
