The
Amazon River Basin is home to the largest rainforest
on Earth. The basin covers some 40% of the
South American continent and includes parts of eight
South American countries: Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador,
Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, and Suriname.
Two-thirds
of the Amazon Rainforest is found in Brazil. The Brazilian
Rainforest has one of the highest rates of biodiversity
on Earth. Brazil is also home to an enormous social
and cultural diversity, which includes a large population
of traditional peoples such as rubber tappers, Indigenous
peoples, fisherfolk, babaçu collectors and
quilombolas (descendants of freed black slaves).
Manaus
is a city with a colorful history. Although located
in the midst of a vast rainforest, Manaus, in the
first decade of the 20th century, offered all the
amenities of any European city of similar or even
greater size. Founded in 1669, Manaus grew slowly
until the late 19th century when rubber transformed
the provincial Manaus into a modern city.
Today,
Manaus is the chief commercial and cultural center
of the upper Amazon region and is a free port. Manaus
is well known for exports of rubber, Brazil nuts,
oil and jute. Along with the lavish mansions of former
"rubber barons", one of the city's key attractions
is the eclectic, neo-Classical Teatro Amazonas built
in the late 19th century — a beautiful pink
and white opera house with a gold tile dome and dazzling
interior detail - the finest fixtures and furnishings
imported from abroad.
