Our tour of Chile begins in Santiago where the first two days will be spent visiting some of Chile’s excellent wineries. In the Maipo Valley, the most famous wine valley in Chile, we will visit the Carmen and the Santa Rita wineries. Continue on to San Martin with a visit to Casablanca Valley’s Vina Mar Winery, where we will learn about their success with new varieties and methods of wine production.

Our tour continues with visits to Valparaiso, and Vina del Mar where we stop at the Villard, Bisquertt, Casa La Postolle, Los Robles and San Pedro wineries before returning to Santiago.

 

Day 1 - Thursday November 8, 2007 - U.S.A. / Santiago
Departure from U.S.A. to Santiago, Chile.

Day 2 - Friday November 9, 2007 - Santiago (D)
Upon your arrival in Santiago you will be transferred to your hotel. Enjoy a city tour of Santiago including the Plaza de Armas, La Moneda (presidential palace), historical sites, monuments and modern neighborhoods. Visit a fine Chilean crafts exhibition, Faba Facco, and San Cristobal Hill for a grand vista of the city and the snow covered Andes. Welcome dinner at one of Santiago’s most famous restaurants. Wine tasting is included.

Day 3 - Saturday November 10, 2007 - Santiago (B, L, D)
After breakfast travel to the Maipo Valley. This is the most famous wine valley of Chile and extends from the Andes mountain range to the sea. Due to low rainfall, well-drained soils and hot summer sun this valley can produce the best powerful red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon. Visit Carmen winery, a modern facility, which is now producing good organic wines. Visit Santa Rita winery and the elegant estate gardens. Lunch will be at the winery in the original hacienda. Return to Santiago. Visit Palacio Cousino, a mansion constructed in neoclassic style between 1875 and 1878, and later declared a National Monument. You will have some free time to shop or explore on your own. In the evening, enjoy Chilean cuisine, folk music and free dancing at a popular nightclub.

Day 4 - Sunday November 11, 2007 - Santiago / Vina del Mar (B, L)
After breakfast, you will checkout of the hotel and then travel to Casablanca Valley, one of the newest appellations. Viticulturists tell us about their success with new varieties and methods, and gleaming new wineries show off their latest bottling. The specialty here is fine white wines, but Chile’s most traditional Cabernet Sauvignon is also proudly served. Our visit to Vina Mar winery includes an elegantly served lunch. After lunch we continue on to Vina del Mar, on the Pacific Ocean and check-in to the hotel San Martin

Day 5 - Monday November 12, 2007 - Vina del Mar (B, L)
After breakfast, you will have a guided city tour of Valparaiso and Vina del Mar. Valparaiso is Chile’s most important port city. It surrounds a busy harbor, and features inclined elevators climbing steep hills and well preserved Victorian architecture. Visit a fishing village and learn about the fishermen, their boats and precarious life at sea. After winding up and down narrow streets, lined with flower shops and playing children, we arrive at La Sebastiana, Pablo Neruda’s Valparasio home. Returning to Vina del Mar we stop a few moments at the famous flower clock, and then continue to Quinta Vergara, a Venetian style palace in an urban arboretum. Lunch will be in a Seafood restaurant. This evening is free to explore on your own.

Day 6 - Tuesday November 13, 2007 - Vina del Mar (B, L)
Today, is dedicated to an excursion along the dramatic coast. We head first towards Zapallar a small, sheltered cove, surrounded by steep hills. You will have free time to enjoy a beachside seafood lunch. On our return, we will visit Cachagua, a large beach resort that harbors a Humboldt Penguin colony a few meters from the coast. Return to Vina del Mar.

Day 7 - Wednesday November 14, 2007 - Vina del Mar / Santa Cruz (B, L)
After breakfast you will checkout and travel to the Casablanca Valley, and a tour of Villard winery. Tour includes wine tasting and inspection of the vineyards. Lunch will be at a typical Chilean restaurant. Continue through the Curacavi valley and travel south down Chile’s central valley. Visit Vivero San Francisco, one of the most modern plant nurseries. Wonder at the abundance of ornamental plants and flowers. Tour a typical fruit farm of the central valley, with a walk through the kiwi and grape plantation and the apple orchard. Continue to Santa Cruz in the famous Colchagua
Valley. This has become one of the most popular wine valleys to visit in recent years. Check-in at your hotel.

Day 8 - Thursday November 15, 2007 - Santa Cruz (B)
After breakfast, you will be given a tour of Montes winery, producer of the most famous Cabernet Sauvignon. Visit Casa La Postolle winery, a classic Colchagua valley producers. This evening is free to explore on your own.

Day 9 - Friday November 16, 2007 - Santa Cruz / Curico (B, L)
After breakfast, you will visit the Colchagua museum, an extensive geological collection and one of the best collections of old vehicles and farm machinery. After lunch at the hotel, you will checkout and continue on to Curico, center of the cherry growing region. Check-in to your hotel. Your evening is free.

Day 10 - Saturday November 17, 2007 - Curico / Santiago (B, L)
After breakfast, we will visit Los Robles winery, one of the few cooperative wineries remaining in Chile, and the San Pedro winery, a major producer of Chilean table wine. Step back 400 years to a classical Spanish style hacienda, the Hacienda Los Lingues, it is part of the Angostura Estate given in 1599 by King Phillip III to the first mayor of Santiago in recognition of his valuable services. Four hundred years of history can be seen in the hacienda, chapel, barns, furnishings, entangled nature, gigantic trees and flourishing gardens. Following a grand multi-course lunch with wine, we are treated to an exhibition of the gallant skills of the Chilean horse. Return to Santiago. Check-in to hotel.

Day 11 - Sunday November 18, 2007 - Santiago / U.S.A. (B)
After breakfast, checkout of the hotel. An optional all day excursion to the top of the Andes Mountains is available before your return flight home.
